The Yogurt King
A Glendale based company developed in 1956 by its remarkable founder Vasa Cubaleski.
"Continental Yogurt is fit for a king"! Actually, it really was! Vasa's Royal Plain Yogurt was originally developed by Vasa for the King of Yugoslavia and the Royal family prior to the Second World War. The Royal family liked it so much that Vasa was asked to produce culture dairy products and other foods for the Royal Court.
Vasa Cubaleski was born in the mountainous region of Macedonia, Yugoslavia. Here for many centuries, the Cubaleski family was known for its knowledge and ability to produce cultured dairy products using only natural ingredients, and their very own secret formulas and processes. Vasa excelled in this art. He spent many years working in his family's food plant processing, researching and lab testing cultured dairy products.Vasa was so well known that he was asked to become the official food taster and court supplier for the Royal family.
In 1939, Prince Paul of Yugoslavia invited Vasa to head a group from the Department of Agriculture, to find a way to produce a natural product to replace ice cream, in order to protect the public from sugars, animal fats, and chemicals know to be harmful, even then.
After only six months of experimentation, Vasa created and developed this new product.
But these wonderful beginnings were soon destined to change direction. The storm clouds of war were rising over the European horizon. Hitler started to over run Europe and in 1940 occupied Yugoslavia and Balkans. This occupation was later followed by the confiscation of the Cubaleski family fortune. Being free spirited minded and a very independent man, Vasa knew he could not live under communist rule, so he fled the country as a political refugee.
In 1954 Vasa came to the United States of America, and with him brought over 200 of his family's secret formulas and culture dairy know-how. Two years later in 1956 Mr. Cubaleski founded Continental Culture Specialists, Inc.
